CBD & Performance

You might be wondering how CBD works in your body. As mentioned in previous blogs CBD works with your Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which is a regulatory system helping various bodily functions. Athletes, professionals, academics and many more across the world are now using CBD and becoming an advocate for its effects. Many also state that it is so beneficial they have incorporated it into their daily regime. So how is it good for your performance?

Firstly, CBD can increase your energy levels.  (We know a company who does it in a coffee too… double bonus!) It gives you a boost by improving and strengthening the cells in your body which are responsible for making you feel sleepy and sluggish. This interaction with the ECS gives you a natural energy boost that we all need from time to time. CBD has also been explored for helping fatigue-related conditions. A CBD coffee a day will make anyone a morning person!

CBD can increase your focus and help concentration by increasing the flow of serotonin to the brain. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter in the human body which is believed to also help regulate mood, social behaviour, appetite, digestion, sleep and memory, demonstrating the broad nature of effects CBD may help with. It has also been explored to help symptoms of attention deficit disorders such as ADHD. There are many reasons a person may not have a great attention span; lack of sleep, stress, distractions. CBD can in fact improve your sleep quality by inducing more ‘deep sleep’, along with reducing your stress levels. Many professionals are using CBD in an attempt to reduce work-related stress.

A poor focus is also sometimes caused by anxiety. So, reducing levels of anxiety should also increase your focus.  One case study has shown that CBD actually decreased anxiety levels in 79.2% of patients within the first month. One of the best things about the CBD and coffee combination is the synergy created. Both coffee and CBD interact with the same brain receptors causing a counteraction of the anxiety and ‘jitters’ associated with caffeine.

Many sports people and those with an active lifestyle use CBD to aid muscle recovery after a lot of strenuous physical activity. This is due to CBD being known to ease inflammation, reduce muscle spasms and relieve pain. A recent article outlined that cannabinoid receptors include CB1, which are predominantly found in the brain, and CB2 receptors which are found on cells linked to the immune system. The fact that both of these receptors have been found on our body’s immune cells makes scientists believe that CBD plays an important vital role in the regulation of the immune system. Several studies have shown that CBD plays an enormous role in suppressing cytokine, and chemokine production, while increasing our body’s T-regulatory cell production in turn helping our body’s anti-inflammatory mechanism.

Overall, a lot of people incorporate CBD into their lifestyle regime to reap the many well-being benefits of this natural and holistic compound. Increasing performance, whether that being physical or mental, may lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle, or it might not… but you’ll never know until you get educated and try for yourself.
